From Hotmail to Outlook: the history of the best-known email server

Hotmail has not only marked the world of computers and emails because it is the most used server, but because it was the first free email service that appeared . Neither more nor less than on July 4, 1996, the day of the independence of the United States.

The coincidence of dates was not isolated, but the creators of this service sought to launch Hotmail that same day to simulate the freedom of communication , since they would be able to break down the international barriers that existed. In addition, it offered users a simple and intuitive service, such as its Hotmail Login interface .

Its founders, Jack Smith and Sabeer Bathia, gave it this name to make known the basic language of web pages: HTML . As a curious fact, it should be noted that in the first logo of this service, the HTML letters appeared in uppercase (HoTMaiL).

The alliance that marked its history
While it is true that Hotmail marked a before and after, his stay would not have been possible if he had followed his path alone. This is because, in its beginnings, Hotmail only allowed 2MB to be stored for free. With the imminent increase of its subscribers - in 1997 they already had more than eight million - I needed to offer them something more .

Thus, some multinationals like Microsoft began to follow in the footsteps of this new company. When Hotmail was already 10 million subscribers, they accepted the juicy offer that Microsoft had made them and started to be part of this company. From that moment, Hotmail stopped knowing itself as such and began to be called MSN Hotmail .

Undoubtedly, this step was a great growth for Hotmail and its popularity, reaching up to more than thirty million users. This data made MSN Hotmail the largest email service in the world .

The competition is coming
Two years after its launch in 1998, Google Inc. was created, a company that would later become the most used search engine of all time. It was in 2004 when Google's success spread worldwide and they thought of expanding their products. The next step of the search engine was what would be Hotmail's biggest competition: its own email service, Gmail .

In addition to being direct competition for offering the same service, Gmail was starting to offer some extras that Hotmail did not have , such as more storage space, faster speeds and a much more interactive interface.

Although a priori it seemed a dangerous rival, Hotmail knew how to overcome these adversities by introducing some updates to its service , such as those that improved security. This was something very striking for the public, so Hotmail remained the number one in the sector.

Hotmail happened to be Outlook
After calling itself MSN Hotmail, Microsoft decided to rename it to Windows Live Hotmail. This name was assigned for several years, almost a decade. But it was in February 2013 when Microsoft announced that the name Hotmail would be permanently deleted and that all Microsoft Live Hotmail accounts would be migrated to their new Outlook.com platform .

This migration was done automatically and all users who created their Hotmail accounts, even the first ones in 1996, now had access to Outlook.com, although this access can still be done from https://loginmailpage.com .

What Outlook offers its users is an improved interface and excellent security , so that users are still staunch to the old Hotmail, choosing it year after year the most used email service.

Thus, the story of Hotmail is the story of a company that has never stopped growing, that has always bet on the future and to offer the best to users who have placed their trust in their services . Hotmail - now Outlook - revolutionized the computer world two decades ago, and continues to change the way we interact with the world through emails.
